Enjoyed watching the video, Kevin. Also, when you change the website, perhaps, it may be a good idea to use Disqus? That allows users to block those they don't want to see, though everyone can still see all comments, unless you delete them as an administrator. When I'm on Disqus, I warn people if they lie or use profanity, and if they proceed, I then block them. I won't be going with Disqus for several reasons, but the new system will have similar tools for managing conversations.

I've communicated with this guy before. There are a couple other references to Merie. Interestingly, nothing by actual members in good standing; they'd prefer to keep her "hidden under a bushel." 🙂
That's very interesting, thank you for sharing this. This is one of the main reasons they try to hide all their teachings from the world.
@ Kevin, when you talked to the one who wrote this article, did you refer him to this blog? Always great to have different people visit and offer their insight into the SCOC.
I did, but it was several years ago. I've even had preachers from other COC congregations (non-Stanton) contact me about the sect based on concerns.
Kevin you said you had trouble finding comments, so I don't know if you missed what I posted earlier too and will try to post it here instead. Have you tried scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking "load more" when the link doesn't take you directly to the comment? I usually read the blog on desktop and when a thread has too many comments it doesn't load them all so you have to scroll all the way down to the bottom and hit "load more" to load the newer comments. I use Brave (based on Chrome) and have tested it in Chrome directly. I never get a Load More button at the bottom.
The new system should solve this problem.
Ahh, I see. I mostly use Firefox myself (heavily edited for privacy/security), along with Startpage.com for searches. Haven't tried Brave and don't really use Chrome anymore so I'm not sure how to make it show up on those. It shows in Firefox just fine. Hopefully the update will help everyone else who has this problem too.
I stopped using Firefox years ago when they kicked out their Christian CEO. He's the guy who started brave, actually. Very privacy conscious browser.
I also use StartPage.com, which is basically Google's search results, but stripped of privacy-leaking cookies.
Anonymous, I read that quite a while back. I did find it interesting and just remember thinking how little sense it seems now to me to follow the rules Merie Weiss instilled in the leaders of her sect today. As the writer mentioned on that link, going too far to one extreme also strays away from Christ's doctrine. The Pharisees would have considered themselves very conservative and to the right, and we know Jesus called them a generation of vipers. Interesting choice of words, given that Satan himself came in that form in the Garden of Eden.
True, M Long. However, we must remember, Jesus was preaching to the Jews, who understood the moral law quite well, and didn't need to be reminded of it. That's why he didn't preach to them about why masturbation, homosexuality, abortion, contraception were evil, and a lot of the other big controversies of our day. The Pharisees legalism was over ticky-tack stuff, that had no salvational significance, as Carl Ketcherside's book relates.
That said, the cure to a lot of this is in the church, in longsuffering, forgiveness, and mercy, 3 attributes that healthy churches have.
Monte – Correction, the Pharisees' legalism permeated every subject they taught. The ticky tack stuff was only one symptom of it, which elevated rule-following above a heart inline with God's. The ticky tack stuff also made the easiest illustrations for Jesus to call out their hypocrisy publicly.
I've told you before, I was a Pharisee of Pharisees in my teens and early 20s. I preached more than one sermon defending them, much to my embarrassment now as a more mature believer.
You're right about the importance of longsuffering, forgiveness, and mercy, though. Would it be a confusion of cause and effect to say that they are the cure, maybe? Hear me out. Legalism results from an unchanged heart that views things as humans do. These fruits of the Spirit result from a heart changed from the inside out by God. So one could argue that longsuffering, forgiveness, and mercy are not the cure of the legalism, but the fruits of having shed the legalism in the heart.
