I appreciate Donna’s willingness to share her story, and hope that others are emboldened to do the same. More importantly, I hope that her experience inspires others to take action!
My Story, by Donna Bennum
In August of 2014 I made my decision to leave ‘the church’ (Stanton churches) which I had been a member of for thirty-six years.
In the weeks that followed I found Rising Sun church of Christ. I sat in their sanctuary and listened to their hymns, as they were accompanied by musical instruments of all sorts. I listened to the preacher speak about God’s love for us and about His GRACE, and how there’s NOTHING we could do to work for that grace of Christ dying on the cross for us. The message that made such an impact on me was “praise God in all we do!” All I have been doing is pleasing MAN by conforming to man-made rules/judgements for all the time I’ve been in the church.
It hit me that I have been held HOSTAGE for the past thirty-six years! Hostage to beliefs that are not inspired by God. Hostage to “judgements” that became DOCTRINE. HOSTAGE to the fear of MAN. HOSTAGE to the fear of God striking me dead if I text while driving, or if I forgot to bless my food before taking a bite (fearing a God of condemnation – not SALVATION.)
I have been HELD HOSTAGE to SCRUTINY! Being analyzed for what you wore, what you spoke, how you moved what you did or did not do. Life in the Stanton churches was NOT a joy and rejoicing of my heart. I would go to worship and classes and anticipate a phone call from a teacher over the next couple of days…your kids didn’t take notes during church, your girls didn’t wear socks with their shoes to Tuesday class, you could see the lines of your bra through the back of your blouse (I was not the only mom who was always equipped with a thermometer to find any excuse to miss classes or worship).
I realized why I never felt really close to my brethren, it’s because I felt I always had to have my guard up because they would eventually bring a perceived offense to me about me or my children.
The ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ came when my husband was counseled to bring our disabled 18 year old child back home to gain guardianship – no matter what legal fees entailed. We were working with social service agencies on a regular basis but it was the church that took away our ability as parents by taking away our ability to make OUR OWN decisions. The Bible teaches that men are to take the role as the head of their homes. The church does not give them that liberty.
Because I was considered a teacher for much of my 36 years I WAS part of the problem with teaching man-made doctrine. I became the enforcer of church rules in my home with my children and in taking away my husband’s authority. Having adopted three siblings out of foster care, and seeing results of “failing” (by Stanton’s measures) with our four bio children, I had decided to be stricter and more diligent with our adopted children. Between my pride and the church rules and three teenagers—it was all out WAR! They could do nothing right in my eyes as I scrutinized them the way the teachers do.
My husband and I were always at odds regarding discipline of the kids. He wanted time to weigh things out and I pushed him to ACT. I was rash. I pushed for what I’d been taught…don’t let ONE act of disobedience go unpunished. I became the enemy in the home but I had convinced myself that it was due to our children’s rebellion. I considered myself to be the righteous one because I was obeying my teachers. Meanwhile, my husband was ‘set down’ for NOT conforming to the hard discipline of the church, as I was doing.
I realized the church does not teach men to lead their homes, nor Christians to make their own decisions. Submitting to your teachers in the church means DON’T question church counsel and judgements. I learned to judge with harshness and hardness out of pride. My self examination became, if I’m approved in the eyes of my teachers then I MUST be approved before God.
Over the years in the church I was withdrawn from twice. Both were unscriptural for offenses fabricated by the church by intruding into people’s private lives. My husband attempted to contest the scriptural basis for my withdraw but was shot down as not having the judgement as the older ones. Once again, he was striving to be the man of his house.
I THANK GOD that he opened my eyes to see that I was NOT serving Him OR my family out of LOVE.
I am ashamed of having a part in teaching these doctrines of man. I don’t want to say that what I have been through in the church for decades is comparable to the three women who were held in chains in a home for decades—but I DO believe I HAVE related to that moment the one woman took courage to rush to the door and take the chance to BREAK OUT in the hope of freedom.
The moment I determined I was DONE WITH BONDAGE, God opened the door to FREEDOM! I praise my God for this! He has shown me I have HOPE. I found my MY hope. He will show you as well. Have faith to ‘step over the side of the boat’ and put away the premise that God exists only within the Stanton churches (another fable of man’s creation).
There IS hope after SCRUTINY! I pray for those still in the Stanton churches, but especially those who are recovering from the damage done by the man-made doctrines within the Stanton churches. So much damage has been done simply by largely omitting the GRACE of Christ from their doctrine. The Stanton churches are NOT a “taste of heaven on earth” because NO ONE will make it to heaven without following Christ’s commandments of LOVE.
You are in my prayers, Donna Bennum.

2 Corinthians 3:16-18 – But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Thank you for sharing your story, Donna. Since I was raised in the Stanton church, I understand dearly what it was like to finally break those chains of bondage that I carried for years after I moved out of my parents home. I tried church now and then but always in the back of my mind was "this church isn't going to heaven" so why am I here?I lost my husband almost 4 years ago and it was with his sudden death that I gave God another chance. I searched for several years and have finally found my Christian family… Read more »
Karen, it's good to hear you didn't let your upbringing in the church keep you from seeking and serving God! I have heard it said often in the Stanton churches "the church is a PERFECT INSTITUTION made up of IMPERFECT people". When I started going to my church that I'm a member of now, I realized how Stanton churches OMIT far more critical elements than, say, eating in the building. They omit the doctrine of LOVE, which is the greatest commandment .Matthew 22:36. GRACE is another HUGE one they fail to teach and apply, which is why they give their… Read more »
Hello Donna, is our husband's name Bill? Also, I know where you are coming from. I worked physical jobs for most of my life and it damaged my spine of 6+ discs above my tailbone. This started in the late 1980's, but did not show any real discomfort or effect on my life until the early 2000's. As time went on I was doing less and less physically until I had to file for disability. This also affected my attendance to classes and worship. I still studied and made it when I could, but that wasn't enough for the teachers… Read more »
Hi Lynn. I too, can relate to your struggle with infirmities. A few years ago when I was dealing with severe back pain,I counseled with one of Stanton's evangelists because I was struggling with not being able to keep church responsibilitiesHe gave me a very good understanding. He said, " outward works are not what Christianity is all about". Unfortunately that is an understanding that is not supported in the congregations by their counsels and teaching or compassion. I, too, could go on and on siting examples but the one that stands out in my mind is when I was… Read more »
Oh. Lynn, his name is WILLIAM. 🙂 did I say that??????
Donna, so glad you saw the light, held fast to that light and escaped the darkness that shrouds this sect. The scripture that comes to mind that captures this sect to me is Galations 5:15 "…But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another." When the focus is on others imperfections instead of on loving others as Christ taught, it is a corrupted system (and I am not talking about rebuking and teaching against immorality or other sins found in the bible). I can be extremely knowledgeable of all scriptures and… Read more »
WOW 36 years…maybe hope is still attainable for the modern day Pharisees (stantonCOC)…they are so entrenched in self rightousness if Paul himself was here in the flesh he would be disfellowshiped because he often spoke of MERCY, GRACE, and RECONCILIATION. Every person that leaves or gets the boot is wicked and going to hell, unless of course, they bow-down to the modern day Sanhedrin ( Kim,Gary, Tom) "the order they are listed in is not by accident".if all the church is ruled by one women, it makes sense why families are upside down as well. Thanks for your testimony Donna!
What is infinitely worse is that Stanton would mark & avoid and withdraw from Jesus Christ himself (their own creator) for making the "… good wine…" (John 2:11) for his mother, disciples, ruler of the feast and wedding participants. Guess they would be calling him a drunkard, a heretic for teaching it was ok(?) and get him on appearance of evil & causing his brethren to stumble. Is forbidding wine because they have ".. grown in judgment"? Yes, they have grown in judgment, judgment that is way beyond Christ himself – WOW. Matthew 11:18 "For John came neither eating nor… Read more »
I think we need to start a prayer campaign to change the hearts of Stanton's leadership. Just think what influence they could have if they awaken one day and recognize the futility of keeping this man-made house of cards propped up.
Anon 7:55 – I now enjoy a glass of wine since learning the truth of understanding on 'drinking wine'. It's truly amazing how many teaching I accepted as truth just because they taught us how we were to understand them. Another one is forbidding Christians from going to a relatives home who is living in fornication. Didn't Christ eat with sinners? Was THIS an appearance of evil. Donna Bennum
Remember judging other Christians for doing things like that? I know I do! The world looks a lot different now, doesn't it? It's almost like being made new! 🙂
Kevin: Totally agree. But we should pray for all of them, leaders and members alike, so that they will be able to see how deceived they have been and that their eyes are opened. Also we should pray that they don't fall victim to the belief that loyalty to people that are filled with error outweighs the truth of what their consciences are showing them once and if they become enlightened.
Donna: I suggest that most of us, if not all of us, blindly followed and believed what we were taught. We were gullible. Once you see the truth you have a responsibility to take action by taking a stand or leaving. As Kevin has pointed out in his "Clean Bible Challenge" misuse of concordances and using single bible scriptures like lawyers or political type agendas instead of getting understanding by the context of the entire book or chapter(s) has made an incredible mess of confused, erroneous propaganda campaigns (2 Peter 3:16 – As also in all his epistles, speaking in… Read more »

@AnonymousJanuary 27, 2015 at 11:31 PM I noticed this a lot to. When I came back in 1999 and spent a great deal in studying, meditating, and prayer I could start seeing things more clear. I didn't understand it at first, but eventually realized that I was actually surpassing my brethren in what they were teaching. I wouldn't just blindly follow what was being taught, but would follow what scriptures taught. I even asked one of the preachers if I follow scripture or example because they are not the same. I began to find myself separating from them more and… Read more »
We ALL speak of praying for the Stanton churches but isn't it interesting that they will not pray for the world because they don't beleive God hears the prayer of anyone outside of THEIR ranks???They say the account of Cornelius is a one time event (Acts 10). Yet there are other examples of God hearing the lost. They use ONE scripture just like the Jehovah Witness. Galatians 5:22 but the fruit of the Spirit is LOVE, JOY, PEACE , FORBEARANCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. I dare say that the church I'm a member of now demonstrates these… Read more »
Thank you for sharing Donna, Very inspiring and VERY TRUE. I have to tell you your story has made waves countrywide in the Church of Christ, which is a good thing. When a human stands up for what is false and doesn't bother checking their adherence to scripture they absolutely should be rebuked. Today the church of Christ is a bunch of Pharisees who think if you do all these good things God will love you. Meanwhile they shut the doors of salvation good and tight to anyone who they deem "unworthy". Then they go on singing about how righteous… Read more »
As if that is not bad enough, Alexander Campbell started the church of Christ to avoid sectionalism and the broke power structure of people in power making up rules and forcing others to follow them, and trying to hide under God's authority, but you get the young bucks in the Church of Christ today who know nothing of history and everything of what their teachers tell them, and you have a recipe for disaster. Just obey your teachers they are told, and when they get up in May Trips they give talks deifying their teachers to the high heavens, only… Read more »
This is correct. I have tried to get the teachers to understand that we will be held accountable for how we treat each other, but it seemed as though they were either ignoring it or not considering it. I had even taken this to the two evangelists, but wasn't even considered.
Also, if you tell any of the preachers why are we making the same mistake as the Catholic Church made with Martin Luther, and why are we making public confessions just like the Catholics confess to their priests, they will take you to James 5 16, and 1 John 1 9 neither of which mean anything close to public confession. The bottom line is, if you lie cheat or steal against your brother you absolutely owe him a confession, but we don't need sin hawks who sit there on Sunday Morning observing who takes the Lords Supper to monitor people's… Read more »
I feel the same way that you do. I love the premise of the CoC, but I too believe they are holding the truth in unrighteousness. You can have the truth, believe the truth, teach the truth, but how you use it can be very damaging. Especially when there is no love behind how I use it. I can use the gospel to either build you up or tear you down. It seems it is easier to be militant about the gospel rather than be merciful with it. I also see how Jesus dealt with those he came to save… Read more »
But if you ask any of the young preachers in the church today, or even the older preachers nationwide, they will be clueless. Ask [names clipped] or anyone period for that matter, about the Reformation, and they'll tell you with a straight face that it doesn't matter because the church of Christ has been here since the time of the Bible. It doesn't bother them at all that no evidence exists for a member of the church of Christ in 1600 or 1700 or 1500. But they will go door to door telling people the church of Christ has been… Read more »
Whew, I need to catch my breath after that bit of righteous indignation, Martin Luther. 🙂 I did clip out a few names–if we can make a point just as effectively without names, I believe it's better, since I do hope to reach these people.
Thank you, well stated in both your history and scripture.
I will say that I agree that the modern Church of Christ as we know it started essentially in Alexander Campbell's day, but you will never get agreement on that, because people use two different definitions of "church of Christ." One is a description…the church "that belongs to" Christ. The other is a name. People fail to understand that when they use it as a name, the Bible didn't, so they are being unbiblical and creating a denomination. So while they may go on and on insisting they're not a denomination, in the same breath they will insist that the… Read more »
The Romans 16:16 verse which they will reference to refute you Kevin is clearly taken out of context from the original meaning…it was a benediction of sorts and can be understood as -the churches' that are of Christ salute you-…basically the writer here was using the churches' of Christ in the possessive form here…which clearly doesn't support that what the churches were called. However; that being said, I don't see a problem with a Church wearing that name: just realize it's not scriptual to say other churches are going to hell because of their NAME. Be well
Martin Luther- I totally agree with you. If the church has taught me and my kids anything it is this: judge, scrutinize, label and criticize people. My kids have helped me to recognize this more than anyone. When my daughter was 13 years olds he was put on display to point out all the ways she was indiscreet. We were at a sister's house (for some reason it was only women and children) all the women were in a circle and my daughter was asked to go to the center of the circle by 'the older' teacher/ high counselor. Donna, so sorry they did that to your daughter and family! It is absolutely CRUEL! I've witnessed plenty of cruel treatment in a variety of ways to numerous people in the years I was in this cult and it is sickening. I have learned to hate the word "indiscreet." That word was used to tear down and unjustly judge people on a continuous basis. The Pharisees were so concerned about how they looked on the outside but clearly God could care less about it other than being modest. Do you recall as a kid being in school and there were… Read more »
Donna! I am so sorry that happened to your daughter. There are mean people in all places. That reminded me…many moons ago before Christianity, my ex and I visited a pentecostal place as a favor to mom for her bday. Well, the visiting evangelist decided that this 12ish girl who had shaved/painted-over gangster eyebrows was bad news. He said "God told me you're giving your mother trouble," etc., from the pulpit. He really let her (not her mom) have it. I was fuming!!! At the end, he did an altar call and EVERYONE went up to the altar. Except me… Read more »
Thank you Kevin, you are welcome, truth must be suffered for and I believe the three S's of learning are See Much, Study Much (the bible first of all but other study is not a crime), and suffer much, and if more people in the church were more worried about what the truth is and less worried about what the punishment is for standing up for it, the church would be changed in a hurry. It fills my heart with tears to learn of one story where a young woman is asking to come to the church, but because the… Read more »
Thanks for understanding about the names. It's an editorial judgment call I have to make and live with. On a few occasions, I've left names intact where it was essential to the point, but for the most part, I think these people know who they are without making it seem personal.
Thank you for your passionate defense of truth, Martin Luther.
Martin Luther- thank you for addressing those issues much better than I can. I just left Wednesday night Bible study at my church. My heart is filled with joy and gratitude for this church God has led me to. Rising Sun church of Christ is very alive, teaching baptism for the remission of sins, teaching of the grace of Christ. The Stanton churches have spoken of "taking the gospel to the lost across the sea" for four decades- Rising Sun has been accomplishing this for longer than that. Rising Sun Church of Christ currently have eleven elders, who, by the… Read more »
My children despise the Stanton churches for many reasons but recently one of my sons helped me understand the big picture. The Stanton church forbids birth control, so many families have at least six children, others many more. The fathers are required to be at bible classes, personal work, and all day Sunday, plus mandatory meeting on holidays, etc, so they do well to hold down ONE job. They are discouraged from college and overtime EVEN IF they could work it in between 'church schedules'.Their wives are not allowed to work outside the home (even if they had the energy… Read more »
Donna, I love, love, love your infectious enthusiasm for the God you now know a lot better! It brings tears of joy to my eyes. I remember when the scales fell off my eyes, so to speak, and I realized what a joy-less example of a Christian I'd been, thinking Christianity was about deciphering correct doctrine and attending the correct church, with a service which had to proceed in the correctly prescribed order, etc. etc.
That, my friends, is churchianity, not Christianity. We should follow a Person–Jesus Christ–not some organization made by fallible men.
I also noticed a HUGE difference in the teens at Stanton and other legalist church vs. the teens in spiritually healthy churches. I could tell the ones with the most Biblical, love-centered teaching by how their teens responded to "church." Where they were off in a corner, disengaged from the church body, there was dysfunction and legalism. Where the teens became part of the church body and were actually discipled, they were on fire for Jesus Christ. I knew there was some good teaching going on there. Galatians 5:22 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,… Read more »
The kids in Stanton churches are motivated by fear. If you don't get baptized, God will strike you dead. Furthermore, the leaders will talk about examples of kids that have died doing drugs or involved in criminal activity and use those examples to push the young into the church. Purely out of fear do the few children out of many believe in Stanton. The fear of man and incorrect fear of God is evidenced by their blind allegiance to rule following and complete teacher adherence after baptism. Kevin, thanks for providing an outlet for constructive criticism and truth. It gives… Read more »
Prodigal Son, all I can say is AMEN!
You must be about my kids' age. They have figured out the first part of what your post is based on. Unfortunately, they are 'turned off' to God or haven't trusted religion enough to give it an honest chance. I'm so happy for you that you HAVE found God in spite of Stanon teaching.
Donna, I also saw an additional burden on the men in the church and it was this: the preachers and teachers did not work as much as other. I was called at least once a month on saturdays to go and work on the preachers car for free. He had the means to pay for a mechanic but choose rather to ask for free repairs. Other preachers got free household repairs from some of the handymen/ self employed in the church. Some of the self employed men in Phoenix did not have money for food and several times I had… Read more »
TC did a talk called, Don't Forget them in the Valley. From what I have seen, experienced, and come across stories like this one and they are the exact opposite of what that talk is about. The church is greatly lacking in the spirit of helping out those who need it. In my congregation is was echoed many times, "Ask not what the church could do for you, but what you could do for the church", and this was said when you would come to the church for help. TC's talk was to help us remember that there brethren that… Read more »
I don't know how many of you listen to contemporary Christian music, but is a great healer, and not at all like the old hymns.
I would encourage you to listen to Jason Gray's " It's More Like Fallin in Love". It seems like the writer had to have exposure to the Stanton churches! (If I were technically literate, I would post a link. 🙂
I agree, Donna. Here's a link to More Like Falling in Love. For anyone who wants top 40 style music with a positive message, check out Air 1. They have many stations across the country, so check their station list for one near you, or get the app for your phone or tablet and stream it. It's also available on IHeartRadio's app. Good stuff. Christian music is the only thing we play in our home, unless we're watching a TV show that has secular music artists. Even then, there's always the fast forward button for the trashy stuff. 🙂 Romans… Read more »
I hear tell this blog is receiving much attention within the ranks of the Stanton churches. The last time something created this much attention in the 'brotherhood'- was it when THE RULES OF THE MARRIAGE BED were revised??? Maybe we can top that!!
It's a shame that the (Stanton)church can tell a grown man not to read something that pertains to him and his family, yet one of their teachers TELLS THEM WHAT they WANT them to believe. This is manipulation. This is OPPPRESION!! You call it PROTECTION. Is this what Christ would have done? Didn't Christ do all things openly? I don't beleive this 'church' is ever going to change. All we can do is pray for the escape of those with good hearts to serve the good Lord – and NOT serve man, being subject to these chains of bondage. God… Read more »

I admire your bravery coming forward as you have done.
Why should Donna felel any different about the marking and avoiding of these three?
Anon. Aug. 5- I can only give credit to God for my change of heart and I'm SO thankful that He must have seen some good thing in me. Consider this. The teaching construct in the Stanton Churches is not scriptural. Woman, according to God, are not to be in the elder/deacon/evangelist/pastor place in the churches of Christ. It is sin. As a consequence there must be oppression even today to make it work. God's design has not been put into action with them so the results are human beings trying to make something work that can not without using force because God is not in it.
In the interest of fair judgment we have to see this for what it is Donna. DC was extracted from the Stanton Churches in 2001 I believe. You, still a 'tough cookie' and 'hard teacher, were under GP, KS, and TC for fifteen years more. What happened there? DC had no influence over you for those fifteen years, in fact, she certainly wouldn't be someone you would want to emulate considering the situation with her. If I remember correctly she was sent to Iowa by GP because of your oppression to relieve the congregation there. If your way of working… Read more »
Honestly, I don't think Dianne was really any 'worse' than those left standing after her fall. I have noticed that most of the extremely oppressive teachers have been women. Maybe Anon 5:10 has a point worth considering.

I also saw that a lot of decisions, judgements, and action/reactions were done more according to how the Christian felt. It is almost as if their Christianity was being fueled by their personality. This causes so many Christians to be partial in how they handle things. As was written, "Are ye not carnal"?
I have to many examples to list, but this is one of the things that help me to start losing respect for a lot of them.
One of the implied teachings in Phoenix was that of Rev20:4 that christians would judge other christians. It was said that "we shall judge our brethren" and it was used to reject and condemn individuals that were deemed unworthy and unwanted. Mother Marylin used it to condemn members of the church she did not like. I was wondering if this was only done in Phoenix or if others held the same understanding or perhaps saw this being done?
I would like to carry on the discussion about women ruling the church in the Q&A section of the blog. I'll post the question with a reference to the comment made by Concerned 5:10.
Perhaps Donna has reconsidered some of the decisions she made while involved in the SCOC.
There are many mental filter one can adopt. A negative filter is created when anything good is either minimized or ignored altogether and negative events are given all the attention. This was the Church of Christ I was a part of: doom and gloom preaching and teaching. God was after you for some vague reason and "something bad was going to happen." I was finally able to remove the negative filter and see God for all his goodness. How many good things can you say about God? If you can't say much then perhaps you too have been given a… Read more »
Even though were are to teach and exhort on the wages of sin we can still take the joy out of Christianity by the majority of the teachings and exhortations being about "doom and gloom". Christianity is also supposed to be about the joy of Christianity and the love of God. We are supposed to be at peace with our brethren as we share the bond of Christianity, but that joy can be taken away by how we treat each other and/or what is being brought out in classes and sermons. I really love the Christian lifestyle and love my… Read more »
