Continuing a series of posts on rules of the church, this list deals with recreation. When I was growing up, it was regularly taught that men’s ball games (baseball, football, golf) were ridiculous wastes of time for a Christian. Never mind the fellowship and camaraderie that comes from sports. A group of us at one of my old church families played volleyball once a month and we formed some great bonds with each other during those years that continue to this day. However, like good Pharisees, sports, for the most part, are decreed sinful or otherwise inappropriate for a Christian.
One fallacious line of reasoning has always been “Can you imagine <insert preacher’s name here> playing basketball?” (Or wearing blue jeans…yes, I’ve even heard that one.) What does that have to do with Biblical mandate? This amounts to nothing more than “comparing ourselves among ourselves.” I can’t imaging a catholic priest wearing blue jeans, but that doesn’t mean God wants him to wear a black shirt with a turned up collar.
2 Corinthians 10:12 – “For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”
Here are some of the rules for recreation:
- Previous
teaching: Recreation is a sin. No fishing, no skiing, no boating, no
ice skating, no amusement parks, no fairs, no ball games, no golf.
- Slow shift in teaching: Some recreation is okay but must not involve
other Christians, and counsel should be sought as to what is acceptable.
- Current teaching: It’s acceptable to ski, boat, fish, hike, camp, etc. with another Christian, especially if children are involved; but no golf, organized sports, or ball games, with the possible exception of playing ball with children.
What I find most interesting is that fishing was once taught against. Dare I state the obvious?
I wish I knew where it went. I found a picture of GP and an older gentleman at what looked like a fishing derby.
Fishing…too funny.
Imagine a group of individuals listening and taking notes while a preacher teaches against fishing and rebukes the poor soul who had the worldly notion to go fishing. Nobody asks if there might be a bit of a problem with the teaching considering the numerous Biblical examples of people fishing. I guess the fish that fed the multitudes were purchased at Fishmart so the disciples would not waste their time fishing when there were souls to save and work of the church to do.
I though I had seen it all.. But I guess not.. Are you telling me they can not fish? Wow.. Just WOW.. what kind of mind can even begin to think like this and then let it spread! I'm actually laughing out loud here
That was previously the teaching back in the seventies and early eighties. Fishing is okay now.
True it is but if the one true church taught it was a sin at one time more proof Merie and her followers were and are off and the Holy Spirit is no where near this cult.
With all the time required to spend in personal work, fellowship, bible classes and church it is a wonder anyone can get an education and I see why no one was allowed to participate in any other activities or after school sports as simply no time. Your lives were consumed by church. A church that was dysfunctional and ruined so many lives and going to ruin many more if they can keep the babies coming. I am hoping that I wake up from this bad nightmare but since it is reality all I can do is keep getting the word out… Read more »
I never understood the reasoning of why kids can't participate in sports. I feel like this cult wants you to raise lazy children.
